His humiliation struck Song Wanxi like a slap in the face, shattering all her hopes. She felt wronged and furious, her heart aching in sharp, painful beats.

Her eyes reddened uncontrollably, shimmering with unshed tears.

Turning away, Song Wanxi gazed out onto the balcony, struggling to suppress the bitterness within, summoning every ounce of strength to hold back her tears.

After a moment, she looked back at him and challenged, “Am I really that kind of person?”

You Jin answered decisively, “You are.”

Another heavy blow. Song Wanxi felt as if a piece of her heart had been carved out, leaving a hollow ache. Stung by defiance, she retorted, “So, according to you, you can flirt and indulge in extravagance, while I can roam freely and seek pleasure. Shall we then continue this marriage of mutual disregard?”

You Jin’s handsome face instantly froze, his fist slowly clenching, his voice deep and resolute. “You’d better abandon that thought.”

“What, then, are we now?” Song Wanxi’s voice softened, trembling with hurt, nearly breaking. “Married for two years, yet always sleeping apart. Is there something wrong with your mind, or your body?”

You Jin’s expression darkened abruptly. Rising, he approached her, gripping her arm and pulling her up.

Startled by the sudden touch, Song Wanxi looked up nervously. “What are you doing?”

He looked down at her, his Adam’s apple moving slightly as his voice turned hoarse. “You didn’t go to work early this morning and complained endlessly, all because of the lack of intimacy. I’ll satisfy you now.”

Panic surged through her. She quickly wrenched her arm free and stepped back anxiously.

In her haste, her calf struck a chair behind her, causing her to stumble and fall backward.

You Jin’s reflexes were swift; he caught her arm again and pulled her back.

Her body collided with his chest. She placed her hands against his firm torso. Through the thin fabric of his shirt, she vaguely felt the warmth of his body and the faint, elegant scent that clung to him.

Steadying herself, Song Wanxi hurriedly withdrew her hands and pressed them against the table, cautiously stepping backward.

Her heart raced wildly, her breath uneven.

Though she did not utter a word of reproach, her gaze was a silent accusation.

Are you sick in the head?

There was no point in continuing this conversation.

She grabbed the bag from the chair beside her, turned away in frustration, and headed toward the door.

At the entrance, she changed her shoes.

You Jin strode over quickly.

Having put on her shoes, Song Wanxi twisted the door handle.

With a loud bang, the door, halfway open, was forcefully pushed back by a large hand behind her.

The unexpected noise made Song Wanxi flinch, her body stiffening. Clutching her bag tightly, she nervously turned to look up at him.

You Jin propped one hand against the doorframe, towering over her.

To her, his strong, imposing figure was like a mountain pressing down, the dangerous chill in his presence an invisible claw gripping her throat tightly, making it hard to breathe, her heart pounding rapidly, an unexplainable dread swelling inside her.

She knew women were physically weaker than men.

But never had she felt it so vividly.

In strength, presence, and stature, she felt like a helpless lamb awaiting slaughter, ready to shatter with the slightest squeeze from this man.

Her clear eyes brimmed with alarm as she whispered timidly, “Don’t act rashly... impulsiveness never ends well.”

You Jin’s gaze was fierce as a beast’s, his voice hoarse and cold. “Song Wanxi, remember this: wandering and seeking pleasure are not things you should do.”

Nervously, Song Wanxi explained, “I just wanted to go to work.”

He withdrew his hand and stepped back.

Without closing the door, she turned and rushed out in a panic.

She wasn’t sure how she had gotten there, feeling dazed as she entered the pharmaceutical research institute. Sitting empty and vacant in the lab, she drifted into a daze.

“Wanxi…”

Startled by a gentle push, she snapped back to reality and looked at the person who touched her.

An Xiao frowned, her face filled with confusion as she gazed at her. “What are you daydreaming about?”

Song Wanxi sat upright, averted her eyes, and shook her head. “Nothing.”

An Xiao sighed softly, a helpless frustration in her tone. “If anyone can distract you in the lab, it’s probably that man of yours.”

Feeling guilty, Song Wanxi quickly changed the subject. “Have the new batch of lab monkeys been purchased?”

An Xiao sat opposite her, resting her chin in her hands, clearly exhausted. “They’ve arrived. I paid for them all with my savings. I just went to finance for reimbursement, but they said several suppliers haven’t sent their payments yet, and the company is holding onto funds to pay salaries. They told me to wait until the payments come through before claiming back the money.”

Song Wanxi patted her shoulder, offering a comforting smile. “There’ll be a double year-end bonus for you.”

An Xiao raised an eyebrow playfully. “Learning that from your You Jin, huh? Giving employees pie-in-the-sky promises?”

The smile on Song Wanxi’s face faded, weariness weighing heavily. “Can we not talk about him?”

“Did you two fight?” An Xiao’s face grew serious, answering her own question. “You shouldn’t have. With how distant you are, barely exchanging a word all year, there’s hardly anything to fight about.”

Who was she fooling?

Song Wanxi opened her mouth, rehearsed the words in her mind, but they caught in her throat and were swallowed back down.

She had to admit, that was true.

At that moment, there was a knock at the door.

An Xiao glanced back.

Song Wanxi looked toward the entrance, assuming it was finance or a sales representative, and softly said, “Please come in.”

The door opened to reveal Wu Weiwei, her heavily made-up face adorned with a false smile. Dressed in a striking red gown that accentuated her voluptuous figure, she stepped inside gracefully. “Sister-in-law, I didn’t expect your pharmaceutical research institute to be so hard to find!”

Song Wanxi’s eyes darkened.

An Xiao’s expression changed abruptly. Crossing her arms, she spoke with sharp hostility, “What are you doing here?”

Wu Weiwei smiled gently at An Xiao, projecting warmth. “I came to see sister-in-law.”

Though Song Wanxi disliked this woman, she had the advantage of good manners and a temper to match. “Miss Wu, is there something you need from me?”
