Chapter 139: What Kind of Robber Logic Is That?

Yan Shu thought this was a pretty good idea. No matter what this formation looked like, Golden Fur was her bonded magical treasure; as long as she summoned it, it was certain to return.
Besides, Golden Fur was an artifact spirit with a mind of its own. It could lead the way perfectly well!
Yan Shu nodded and immediately summoned the Thunder Whip, transforming it into a thunder wyrm. The moment Golden Fur appeared, it was about to let out a dragon’s roar, but Yan Shu was quick enough to clamp a hand over its mouth.
Lowering her voice, she said to Golden Fur, “Be good. Don’t make a sound. Quietly go ahead and scout the way.”
Golden Fur immediately nodded.
Yan Shu released its mouth and said, “Go!”
It slipped into the formation ahead.
Golden Fur was a thunder wyrm, with lightning naturally shining from its body. Even in the darkness of night, its figure could be seen clearly.
Yet the instant it entered the formation, it vanished into thin air before Xiao Jihan and Yan Shu’s eyes.
Yan Shu’s heart lurched. She hurriedly summoned it, but although she could sense its presence, it did not appear before her.
Xiao Jihan frowned, and Yan Shu grew irritated as well. “What kind of ridiculous thing is this? Where’s my Golden Fur?”
Xiao Jihan glanced ahead and said in a low voice, “Don’t summon it for now. This appears to be a space-folding formation. It looks ordinary enough, but the space within has been folded. Once someone enters, they will be sent somewhere else. There may even be more than one space.”
Yan Shu did not care about any of that. She only cared about her Golden Fur. “Then what do we do? Could it be trapped inside?”
“No.” Xiao Jihan lowered his voice. “A guardian serving the city lord would never be above the Nascent Soul stage. Even if he is proficient in formations, the distance across which space can be folded is limited. It cannot exceed five miles in any direction, so it must still be somewhere within the city lord’s residence. Don’t summon it yet, lest we alert the enemy.”
Yan Shu frowned. “So we can see it but not touch it? If the city lord stays in there, are we supposed to do nothing but stare?”
At this, Xiao Jihan suddenly gave a cold laugh. “I told you before. As long as one has sufficient strength, one can simply destroy the formation.”
With that, before Yan Shu could react, he stepped into the formation ahead.
Yan Shu wanted to follow, but after thinking it over, she drew her foot back.
Xiao Jihan was already at the Deity Transformation stage. His strength was naturally sufficient. Even against a Nascent Soul guardian, he would not lose.
But she was different. Although her cultivation was said to be in the late Deity Transformation stage, in truth, she was only at the peak of the Nascent Soul stage!
She would be better off staying right here, waiting for the male lead to return triumphantly after cutting through every obstacle, then applauding him and telling him how awesome he was.
Yan Shu found a shadowed spot and obediently waited. After quite some time, Xiao Jihan emerged, with Golden Fur following at his side.

Yan Shu immediately went up to him and sincerely said, “You’re amazing!”
Xiao Jihan paused slightly at her words. Seeing the way her eyes shone, he tilted his head a little. “To fold space, this formation naturally had to establish auxiliary formations within that space. Once those auxiliary formations were destroyed, the formation itself would collapse. It was nothing more than a cheap trick.”
He lifted his chin slightly, his face filled with pride. He looked just like a little child in kindergarten being praised.
Yan Shu secretly found it rather amusing. He really was Xiao Three-Year-Old.
She recalled the Thunder Whip and, very considerately, played along. “Yes, yes, you’re the most amazing! What do we do next?”
Xiao Jihan snorted. “Naturally, we go straight there and demand our spirit stones. Let’s go!”
As the saying went, a crafty rabbit had three burrows. The more wicked a person was, the more guilty they tended to feel. Sure enough, the city lord was not in the main residence of the city lord’s manor.
But by sheer coincidence, Xiao Jihan knew the person who was there.
It was the shopkeeper who had switched out his spirit stones that very morning!
The shopkeeper went completely dumbstruck when he saw Xiao Jihan. With a face full of disbelief, he pointed at Xiao Jihan’s nose and stammered, “You… you… you! How did you get in here? This is the city lord’s residence!”
Xiao Jihan gave a cold snort. “So what if this is the city lord’s residence? Hand over my spirit stones, or the anniversary of your death will be this day next year!”
Aside from the occasional childishness he displayed in front of Yan Shu, Xiao Jihan was normally restrained and carried an icy, chilling presence.
The shopkeeper had no doubt whatsoever that he meant every word. He immediately tried to flee.
Yan Shu flicked her whip and dragged him straight back.
The shopkeeper looked at Xiao Jihan and Yan Shu as though he had seen the Black and White Impermanence. He was so frightened that he could barely stand.
Stammering, he said, “No, you can’t kill me! I’m a mortal. Cultivators aren’t allowed to attack mortals!”
“Hah!”
Xiao Jihan gave a cold laugh. “Where did you get the confidence to think that after cheating cultivators out of the spirit stones they worked so hard to accumulate, they would simply swallow their anger?”
Hearing this, the shopkeeper seemed to find his courage. He straightened up at once and said, “Stop trying to scare me! I’ve stolen spirit stones from so many cultivators, and not one of them has come looking for revenge like you!”
Yan Shu was somewhat taken aback. Were these cultivators cultivating immortality, or were they practicing to become ninja turtles?
Or was the rule forbidding them from attacking mortals really that important?
Important enough that they would rather endure being treated like turtles than dare lay a hand on a mortal?

Yan Shu could not make sense of it. She gave a soft snort and said, “It’s not that they didn’t want to find you. They simply couldn’t. Besides, you’ve never stolen more than a hundred mid-grade spirit stones from anyone in one go, have you?”
“Do you know what more than a hundred mid-grade spirit stones mean? Even an inner disciple receives only one mid-grade spirit stone as a monthly allowance. One hundred and thirty spirit stones is more than ten years of their allowance!”
“What makes you think we wouldn’t come looking after losing that many spirit stones?!”
“B-but it’s only ten years.” The shopkeeper stuck out his neck. “You cultivators have incredibly long lifespans. Some people even live to be ten thousand years old! It’s only ten years. Why are you being so petty?”
“Hah!”
Yan Shu was so furious that she laughed. What kind of absurd bandit logic was this?
Xiao Jihan had clearly grown too impatient to waste any more words on him. He pressed a sword against the shopkeeper’s throat and said coldly, “Hand over the spirit stones, or die!”
Brother Xiao was truly a man of action: ruthless and never one to waste words.
The shopkeeper was clearly intimidated by this approach. He stared at the blade trembling against his throat and stammered, “Immortal… Immortal Sir, it’s not that I don’t want to give them to you. The spirit stones aren’t in my hands anymore! I handed them over to the city lord’s people this morning!”
Xiao Jihan pushed the tip of his sword a little farther forward and said coldly, “Where is the city lord?”
Pinned against the wall, the shopkeeper stammered, “In… in the secret chamber. After receiving the spirit stones, he takes several guardians with him to the secret chamber!”
Yan Shu asked, “Where is the secret chamber?”
“I… I don’t know. Sirs, I truly don’t know!”
Yan Shu frowned and changed her question. “Then is the secret chamber located within this city lord’s residence?”
“It is! It is!” The shopkeeper hurriedly nodded. “At the very least, the entrance is here!”
Having obtained the information they wanted, Xiao Jihan struck the man across the back with his palm and knocked him unconscious.
Yan Shu glanced at the man and said to Xiao Jihan, “There’s something wrong with his mind. We can’t possibly expect him to mend his ways. Disable his hands a little so he can never again use them for those nimble, harmful tricks.”
