Wang Chuqin
[What! No one told me!]
A shout echoed through the group chat named the “Tokyo Olympic Ping-Pong Fairy Team.”
The other three who saw the message were startled. Had no one informed Duan Nanzhou that there would be a live broadcast tonight?
The three who were currently live streaming together glanced at their phones, then exchanged surprised looks. It was clear they had all forgotten to tell Duan Nanzhou about it, and they awkwardly smiled at each other.
They recalled the sequence of events. It seemed they had suddenly decided to do a live Q&A on a short video platform to chat with fans. Perhaps they confirmed it through a chat on the platform itself and forgot that Duan Nanzhou didn’t have an account and couldn’t see their conversation.
Later, they assumed someone had informed Duan Nanzhou, and thus the misunderstanding occurred.
That evening, Liu Shiwen started the live stream and spent quite some effort inviting her close friends to join. Eventually, Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng joined.
The three chatted while waiting for Duan Nanzhou. Fans kept asking why someone was missing. After a long wait without Duan Nanzhou’s appearance, they wondered if she wouldn’t connect after all. Fans also reported not seeing her live stream, which made the three a bit anxious.
Liu Shiwen quickly tagged Duan Nanzhou in the group chat, asking why she hadn’t shown up yet. Duan Nanzhou, who was on a video call with Wang Chuqin, was taken aback by the message. Live stream? What live stream?
Without hesitation, Duan Nanzhou ended the video call with her boyfriend and started a group video call to inquire about the situation.
Wang Chuqin, suddenly cut off, protested with a hint of jealousy, “Am I so worthless that you just toss me aside like that?!” (annoyed)
After a brief explanation from the others, Duan Nanzhou pieced it together. So the Tokyo Olympic women’s team was live streaming, but no one told her? Mainly because she didn’t have an account!
Initially thinking of skipping participation, Duan Nanzhou finally agreed to join after some coaxing from her close friend Sun Yingsha, asking them to wait a bit longer.
She planned to register an account and learn how to start a live stream first.
Fans watching saw Sun Yingsha’s playful coaxing and the two older sisters smiling warmly, feeling that the chemistry between Sha and Zhou was truly delightful.
Duan Nanzhou was asking Wang Chuqin, who was familiar with short video platforms, how to proceed. To her surprise, he suggested she use his account instead, for convenience.
Duan Nanzhou responded with silence. This guy was always trying to prove he was her official boyfriend, constantly showing off their relationship.
After making the suggestion, Wang Chuqin started giggling foolishly. Although he knew it was unlikely, he believed that one day everyone would know they were dating.
Guided by Wang Chuqin, Duan Nanzhou successfully registered an account and entered the live stream, finally joining the three sisters.
Meanwhile, the three anxious teammates and numerous fans speculated about why Duan Nanzhou hadn’t arrived yet. Some fans even suggested the three bored teammates play a card game like “Dou Di Zhu” to pass the time, hoping she would join in soon.
“Finally, she’s here! Welcome, welcome~” Sun Yingsha led the applause, warmly welcoming her.
The comment section instantly lit up with excitement. Everyone thought Duan Nanzhou looked even better live, softer and gentler than her usual fierce competition appearance. Though dressed in simple home attire, she carried a unique aura.
Chen Meng, hosting the live stream, happily read out loud some of the comments.
“Sister Duan is so beautiful, I can’t stop staring!”
“With that looks and skills, she could debut right here and now.”
“Why is no one mentioning how lovely Sister Duan’s hands are? Smooch smooch~”
“Can I borrow your face for a bit, Sister Duan?”
Among them were a few comments like:
“Sha Sha and Sister Duan really are a perfect match, born for each other!”
Chen Meng grew more delighted reading the comments and teased Duan Nanzhou with those related to her.
“Dream sister, stop it now!” Duan Nanzhou quickly intervened, worried the flattering praise would never end.
Elder sister Liu Shiwen just smiled, feeling her three younger teammates were truly amusing.
“What did you guys talk about before I joined?” Duan Nanzhou tried to steer the conversation back to the live stream’s topic.
“Just chatting and waiting for you,” Sun Yingsha replied.
“Right, now that everyone’s here, shall we answer some fan questions?” Chen Meng suggested.
The other three nodded in agreement.
“There’s one: Who among the four of us can eat the most?”
Upon hearing this, they all pondered.
Liu Shiwen’s first reaction was, “Dream definitely can’t eat much!”
“But Dream eats a variety of things!” Sun Yingsha confidently said.
Chen Meng laughed non-stop at this.
“True, but Dream doesn’t eat large quantities,” Liu Shiwen added.
“Nanzhou eats the most!” Liu Shiwen declared, looking to Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng for confirmation.
Sun Yingsha burst into laughter because the comment section was full of disbelief, accusing Xiao Zao Jie of lying—Duan Nanzhou was so slim, with defined abs!
“Yeah, I probably eat the most,” Duan Nanzhou herself agreed.
“But Zhou Zhou is picky and has high standards for food!” her close friend Sun Yingsha added.
Chen Meng suddenly thought of something and quickly said:
“But eating with Nanzhou is never a mistake. She’s our national team’s gourmet radar!”
Liu Shiwen and Sun Yingsha nodded vigorously. It was consensus within the national team; whenever they wanted to eat something, they’d ask Duan Nanzhou first for a sure bet.
“Oh, here’s another one: Among the men’s team, who eats the most? Who’s the most handsome?” Chen Meng read from the comments.
Everyone just laughed; no one dared to answer.
“That might offend someone, Dream!”
“Well, who eats the most should be answerable, right?” Chen Meng asked uncertainly.
Liu Shiwen pretended to think for a moment, then tossed the question to Sun Yingsha:
“Sha Sha, your turn!”
“Huh? Hahaha…” Sun Yingsha burst out laughing, “Zhou Zhou, you answer! No, Dream, you answer!”
“No, Dream, you better do it!” Duan Nanzhou quickly dodged the question, refusing to hold onto it.
“Well, maybe we better not… hahaha, don’t want to offend anyone!” Chen Meng hurriedly said, but still read out the comment: “Netizens say it’s Xiao Pang!” (Little Fatty)
After a serious round of talks about the Tokyo Olympics and the upcoming National Games, the live stream shifted back to lighthearted fun.
“Sha Sha, why don’t you sing a song? You’ve practiced a few, right?” Chen Meng suggested first.
“Ah?” Sun Yingsha was surprised and quickly wanted to rope in her best friend Duan Nanzhou, “Zhou Zhou, sing with me!”
“I’m not good at singing,” Duan Nanzhou flatly lied.
The three were stunned by her earnest denial. Liu Shiwen, who had been quietly watching, blurted out:
“Zhou Zhou, you sang so beautifully last time—I even have a video! Don’t lie with your eyes wide open!”
That single word “last time” made Sun Yingsha and Chen Meng’s eyes widen, almost wanting to cover Liu Shiwen’s mouth. Luckily, Liu Shiwen stopped herself just in time, and they all breathed a sigh of relief.
Duan Nanzhou, the subject of the comment, remained calm and emotionless, maintaining only a teasing smile.
Fans watching immediately caught onto this and debated what Liu Shiwen was hinting at. Many clamored for the video to be played.
“Well then, how about you all dance the last dance, and I’ll sing a song?” Duan Nanzhou threw down the challenge. She had missed the last show but had watched the video of their group dance and wanted to see it again.
The three froze; it was an event they preferred to forget. Moreover, Wang Manyu, who was involved in that dance, was absent tonight. When she saw the live stream later, she just patted her chest in relief, glad she wasn’t there.
Still, encouraged by fans, they agreed.
Though brief, the segment was hilarious. Their dance clip circulated widely on short video platforms, spawning many imitators and boosting their popularity once again.
Of course, Duan Nanzhou’s official smile throughout their dancing—her lips barely curved—became a new trend. Fans called it the strongest smile for dealing with polite yet annoying situations, as if saying, “I’m listening seriously while subtly mocking you.”
Duan Nanzhou: “I don’t mean that, really?” (confused)
After the dance, as promised, Duan Nanzhou sang Jay Chou’s “Confession Balloon,” ending with applause from her three little fans.
Wang Chuqin secretly saved the recording as his phone ringtone later—too sweet!
The comment section was filled with shock and praise, begging for another song, but their requests were mercilessly ignored.
Finally, amidst the awkward banter of the small team, the live stream ended.
Their material from today’s live stream fueled countless marketing accounts, and for quite some time, clips from it were repeatedly circulated, even resurfacing during major competitions every year.
After the stream, Sun Yingsha continued video chatting with her best friend Duan Nanzhou, chatting about food, gossip, daily venting, the upcoming mixed doubles with Wang Chuqin, and the fact they’d have to play at the mid-far court again, among other things.
The topics between best friends never ended; only at midnight did they reluctantly hang up. Young people sure had stamina for staying up late.
Meanwhile, Wang Chuqin, who had secretly watched his girlfriend’s live stream via a borrowed account, happily tried to call her again, only to find he couldn’t get through.
After messaging to ask what was going on, he learned that after chatting with Sha Sha, Duan Nanzhou stopped responding to any of his messages.
Stubborn Wang Chuqin thought they couldn’t still be chatting so late and waited patiently, hoping at least to call and say goodnight. But he fell asleep waiting, never getting the chance.
The next morning, Wang Chuqin woke up, realizing…
His greatest rival wasn’t someone of the same gender, but his girlfriend’s best friend!
