Prologue: Take Responsibility for Me

After working overtime for half a month straight, Shi Zhaodi finally snapped.
“Those evil capitalists are nothing but bloodsuckers! They have no humanity!”
Sitting across from her, Liang Xue, a newcomer who had also been working overtime for nearly half a month, was frantically winking and gesturing at her.
“What’s wrong with you, Liang Xue?” Shi Zhaodi asked, baffled.
Liang Xue had no choice but to stand up and greet their visitor with a stiff smile.
“Good morning, Mr. President.”
Shi Zhaodi froze.
It was not because she had just insulted capitalists as bloodsucking, heartless monsters.
It was because of the person standing behind Liang Xue.
Jiang Hao’en nodded. The very first sentence he spoke nearly made Shi Zhaodi wish she were dead.
“Secretary Shi, please come to my office for a moment.”
Without waiting for her response, he turned and walked out of the secretaries’ office.
When Liang Xue saw that Shi Zhaodi remained motionless, she hurriedly reminded her again.
“Zhaodi, the president asked you to go to his office!”
“Can I refuse?” Shi Zhaodi groaned, lifting her head.
“Of course you can—provided you’re willing to give up your salary, your year-end bonus, and not worried about paying the penalty for breach of contract...” Liang Xue leaned closer and asked curiously, “Zhaodi, why are you so afraid of the president?”
“Aren’t you afraid of him?” Shi Zhaodi countered weakly.
“I respect him quite a lot, but I don’t think I’m anywhere near as terrified as you are.”
“What do I look like?”
“Like a mouse that’s just seen a cat,” Liang Xue said with a giggle.
Shi Zhaodi pressed a hand to her forehead and said helplessly, “Then just think of me as the cat.”
With that, she headed toward the president’s office.
After giving the door a perfunctory knock, she pushed it open and entered.
“Mr. President, you wanted to see me!” It was the standard opening line, the very embodiment of a capable and efficient secretary.
“I have a dinner engagement tonight. Remember to pick up my son from kindergarten at four-thirty this afternoon,” Jiang Hao’en instructed, looking up.
“Um—Mr. President, I’m afraid it wouldn’t be very appropriate for me to pick up your son?” Shi Zhaodi nearly burst into tears.
It was true that a secretary was practically a universal ointment, applied wherever needed.
But expecting her to serve as both the president’s nanny and his son’s stepmother seemed to be taking things a little too far!
“Is there a problem?” Jiang Hao’en asked, frowning.
“No problem at all. As your subordinate, I will of course devote myself wholeheartedly to whatever task you assign me!” Shi Zhaodi immediately changed sides.
For the sake of a high salary and generous bonuses, she would not only consider picking up his child—she might even consider having one for him!
“Mm. I’ll be home late tonight,” Jiang Hao’en added before lowering his head and returning to his work.
Shi Zhaodi stood there stiffly, unable to process his words.
What exactly was that supposed to mean?
Why did it sound so suggestive?
“Is there anything else?” Jiang Hao’en asked, looking up at Shi Zhaodi, who was still standing there without moving.
“No, Mr. President! I’ll go get to work now, and I’ll be at the kindergarten at four-thirty sharp to pick up your son.” With an ingratiating smile, Shi Zhaodi turned to leave.
Just as she reached for the door, she remembered an important question and hurriedly turned back.
“Oh, right. Once I pick him up, where am I supposed to take him?”

“Bring him back to our home. Any other questions?”
“Heh-heh, no, that’s all!” Shi Zhaodi nodded obediently.
She had barely stepped out of the president’s office before her face crumpled in despair.
That was clearly her apartment, wasn’t it?
Since when had it become their home?
Ugh. Whenever she thought of what had happened one night a few months earlier, she felt utterly speechless.
That morning, she had sleepily opened her eyes, only to find herself gazing upon—
A handsome, completely naked man sleeping beside her.
And that handsome man was none other than her immediate superior, a man several ranks above her.
She had just been wondering how to slip away without being discovered when he opened his eyes.
He stared at her for quite some time before drawling leisurely,
“Zhaodi, this time you’ll have to take responsibility for my innocence, won’t you?”
At once, Shi Zhaodi felt as though an entire flock of crows had flown over her head...
