Chapter 122: How Humble Love Appears
After officially starting work, her colleagues showed great care for Xiaoxiao, but Lin Shuo only ever saw her off downstairs and picked her up on time, never coming upstairs. Occasionally, she would run into Nina in the elevator; both were polite but no longer mentioned Zeng Ziyu. Having witnessed that scene from the other day, Xiaoxiao was already quite certain of Nina’s feelings toward Zeng Ziyu, which made her even more unwilling to face the matter or confess to Hua Mei.
Lately, there wasn’t much to do; it seemed Manager Huang did this intentionally, treating her like a goddess to be worshipped, perhaps even a goddess of wealth.
Bored to death, she waited for the clock to tick a few more moments before Lin Shuo’s car was parked beneath the building. She greeted him through the window; he raised his hand and pointed at his watch, signaling that it was almost time.
“Hey, do you have plans again tonight?” He Li teased as she smiled gently. “Every day, is that so strange?”
“Jealous, envious, and hateful!” He Li laughed and walked away, just as the phone rang.
Bai Yunchuan’s voice was frantic on the line, urgently asking if she had seen Yu Xin. For a moment, Xiaoxiao felt stunned. “Isn’t Sister Xin with you?”
Ever since Bai Yunchuan had confronted his family in front of her last time, they hadn’t kept in touch much. His life with Yu Xin was probably difficult, and with so many things occupying her own mind, she hadn’t paid much attention.
“Yu Xin is missing.”
“What? How could she be missing? Have you checked her home?” Xiaoxiao’s concern grew. Yu Xin was a woman with a strong character, but if she was momentarily lost in thought, who knew what she might do?
Bai Yunchuan sounded helpless. “We’ve looked everywhere she could possibly go. Has she really not contacted you?”
“Don’t worry. I’m leaving work now to come find you.”
Seeing her rush downstairs with a pale face, Lin Shuo knew something had happened and grew anxious. “What’s wrong?”
She quickly got into the car. “I’ll explain on the way.” She recounted Bai Yunchuan’s story in full. For a long while, neither spoke a word.
So many are bound together but their hearts grow distant; so many hearts are intertwined yet never fulfilled. It’s hard to say who suffers more.
When she finally saw Bai Yunchuan, Xiaoxiao was shocked by his disheveled appearance. He had always lived exquisitely, but Yu Xin’s disappearance had left him neglecting himself, looking like a completely different man.
“When did Sister Xin disappear?”
“It’s been two days,” Bai Yunchuan said, holding a photo frame, his brow furrowed.
Lin Shuo surveyed the small, warm home, which clearly housed only two people. Everywhere were photos of their tender and intimate moments. If one was gone, the whole place felt empty.
“Why?” Xiaoxiao firmly believed that Yu Xin, as a mature woman, would not be capricious like Hua Mei. Her leaving must have a reason.
Bai Yunchuan sighed deeply, his eyes flickering. “If I’m not mistaken, my family must have searched for her.”
Xiaoxiao was taken aback. The relationship between Bai Yunchuan and Yu Xin had always been more difficult than most, with the greatest obstacle coming from the elders of the Bai family. After all, Yu Xin’s unwillingness to end things with Bai Yunchuan stemmed from love, so wasn’t the Bai elders’ refusal to let them continue also born of love? When two affections clash, one must compromise. Could Yu Xin, after struggling for years, really give up so easily?
She refused to believe it, unwilling to accept it—otherwise, what a humiliating thing love would be.
