Chapter Sixty-Nine: The Truth of the Gods
“Yes, it must be a god,” Bai Ziyu once again regained his composed expression and said, “Mr. Gu, you must have received the grace of a deity. I lost to a god, not a man. The power of a god cannot be broken by mere mortals.”
Gu Sha was speechless, and without hesitation, slapped Bai Ziyu across the face. “God, my ass. It’s just the power of an inscription, nothing divine about it!”
He then pinned Bai Ziyu down and delivered a thorough beating, but Bai Ziyu kept shouting that a god could not be defeated, causing Gu Sha to roll his eyes. After a few more kicks, Gu Sha took the scepter and broke it with a powerful twist, revealing its true form—a bone.
Seeing the bone, Gu Sha’s heart tightened. He recognized it as the bone of a royal-class beast, still retaining some of the inscription’s power. This explained why, in those visions of the future, Bai Ziyu could calmly walk away from the beast tide. The royal beast’s inscription, not to mention the beasts themselves—even ordinary missiles couldn’t break it. For lesser beasts and zombies, it exerted immense pressure.
“So this is your so-called divine artifact?” Gu Sha looked at Bai Ziyu sprawled on the ground. “It’s just a bone.”
Bai Ziyu replied, “Even if it’s just a bone, it’s one bestowed by the gods, infused with divine power. That makes it a divine artifact. Its power is unmatched—it’s godly might!”
“Godly might, my foot,” Gu Sha retorted. “It’s inscription power, that’s all. Do you even know what inscription power is?”
“Divine power,” Bai Ziyu insisted.
Gu Sha growled, “You—!” Seeing Bai Ziyu so deeply entrenched in his faith, Gu Sha punched him again, saying, “Nonsense! You’re an extraordinary being yourself. You know the human body has nine genetic locks, right? Once all nine are unlocked, the next step is to develop inscription power—that’s what you call ‘divine power.’”
Bai Ziyu’s eyes went wide with panic. “Impossible! Unless blessed by gods, how could humans possess divine power? You’re lying! I’ve seen gods. Gods won’t deceive me. I have objects blessed by gods—divine artifacts and divine power that can mass-produce extraordinary beings. Can humans do that? You can’t fool me!”
Gu Sha kicked Bai Ziyu and rummaged through his backpack, finding a jade bottle containing a viscous, blue-green liquid.
Bai Ziyu boasted, “This is the divine medicine, bestowed by the gods. Extraordinary warriors can be created instantly!”
Gu Sha uncorked the bottle and sniffed it, a knowing smile spreading across his face.
Earlier, when Deputy Director Meng revealed that the Purification Society possessed the technology to mass-produce extraordinary warriors, Gu Sha had already guessed the truth. Now, seeing the so-called divine medicine, he understood exactly what it was.
In the future, this stuff would become commonplace, known as genetic serum. Not exactly ubiquitous, but anyone with money could buy it. It was refined from special plants that appeared after the world’s transformation, a potion that forced the user to burn their potential.
This serum was popular in the slums, where becoming an extraordinary warrior was nearly impossible—no resources, no cultivation techniques, barely enough to eat. Sometimes an entire clan would scrape together money to buy a bottle, hoping to turn a physically fit person into a warrior.
The effects varied by individual talent, some reportedly reaching the third tier instantly, though most barely managed the first. Whether it was a bargain or not was impossible to say, since it forcibly elevated the user at the cost of all future potential. After using it, you were forever locked at that level—no matter what, you could never break through again, because the serum burned all the genetic locks at once.
Whether you jumped to the first or third tier, you lost the chance for further advancement. To reach the third tier instantly meant you had rare talent, but you’d be stuck there for life—a loss, some would say. But without the serum, you might never have become extraordinary at all, so it’s hard to judge.
In the future, this was just a tool devised by capitalists to profit from the common folk, looked down upon in the extraordinary world. Yet, it undeniably offered the masses a way out—a previous generation would exhaust their potential to give their descendants a path forward.
But now, looking at the genetic serum in his hand, Gu Sha felt deeply shaken. It struck him as hard as the royal beast bone had. According to his memories, this serum appeared even later than royal-class power; it was invented in the fourth year after the world’s apocalypse.
And now, it had appeared four years early.
Bai Ziyu was oblivious to Gu Sha’s thoughts. Seeing Gu Sha’s grave expression, he laughed, “See? Divine medicine, divine power! Can humans do that? Hahaha, Mr. Gu, give up. Don’t defy the heavens. Join us, and I’ll ask the gods to bless you with the honor of serving them…”
“Idiot!” Gu Sha slapped Bai Ziyu, knocking out several teeth. “This thing’s just a potion made from strange plants and fruits. Stop pretending to be so high and mighty. But—” Gu Sha gripped Bai Ziyu’s throat, “I’m curious, where did you find these things?”
Bai Ziyu’s face reddened as Gu Sha strangled him, yet he grinned viciously. “You want to meet the gods? Join us… I’ll give you the chance to see them, you—”
“Damn it!” Gu Sha punched Bai Ziyu unconscious, tossed him into a nearby armored vehicle, and gathered up his things before driving to the Association of Extraordinary Beings.
Gu Sha’s identity was no secret at the association; no one dared to stop him, even when he walked in carrying a person. The guards simply notified the higher-ups.
Soon, just as Gu Sha reached the entrance, Director Chen, with his Mediterranean head, hurried down. “Mr. Gu, the Chairman has already led a team to the outer front lines. Are you here to see him?”
“Seeing you will do,” Gu Sha replied. “Is there a mental-type extraordinary in the city?”
“Do you need a mental-type for something?” Director Chen asked.
Gu Sha glanced at the unconscious Bai Ziyu in his hand. “This guy is Bai Ziyu, the Red Cardinal of the Purification Society. He has many secrets—officials should be interested.”
Director Chen’s face changed instantly. He shouted, “Notify the Chairman immediately! Gather all mental-type extraordinaries in the city!”
